BMW has begun the production of the new BMW X3 (third generation) at its facility in Chennai. The vehicle will be launched on April 19, and was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2018 last month.
It’s larger and thus more spacious than the second-generation version it replaces. But BMW has also made the chassis stiffer and the overall vehicle lighter by up to 55 kilos. That should translate into better on-road dynamics and efficiency. Engine options are likely to remain unchanged (2-litre petrol and diesel units), although we wish BMW doesn’t take too long to bring the 3-litre inline-six units as well. Like the other new BMW vehicles, this one too is expected to be loaded with features, including an M Performance styling kit for those who like their SUVs a bit sporting.
BMW India’s President, Vikram Pawah said, “The all-new BMW X3 is now set to continue the success story, with even more striking and dynamic styling and a luxurious interior. Like all members of the successful X family, it combines outstanding ride quality on all terrains with unlimited everyday practicality. I would like to congratulate BMW Group Plant Chennai team for achieving this important milestone and we are extremely proud for the smooth start of production of the all-new BMW X3.”
MD at BMW’s Chennai plant, Jochen Stallkamp added, “We are excited to start local production of the much-awaited third generation BMW X3. The all-new BMW X3 offers advanced design language, innovative technologies and top-of-the-line equipment. BMW Group Plant Chennai is proud to locally-produce the latest and one of the most diverse product portfolios that has the highest standards of quality, distinguished workmanship and uncompromising engineering. We are confident that the all-new BMW X3 produced in Chennai will further increase our momentum in the Indian luxury car segment.”
