Triumph Motorcycles has unveiled the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, its new affordable range of bikes developed in collaboration with Bajaj Auto. Both models will be launched in India on July 5, 2023, and will further be built locally at Bajaj’s Chakan plant.
The Speed 400 is a neo-retro roadster featuring a clean design. It has a circular LED headlamp with a teardrop-shaped fuel tank and a single-piece seat. The bike features bar-end mirrors, a single upswept exhaust and 17-inch alloy wheels shod with Metzeler Sportec M9 RR tyres. It has an upside-down front fork offering 130 mm of travel and a mono-shock at the rear. Braking power is provided by a 300 mm rotor at the front and a single disc at the rear.
The Scrambler 400X is designed to tackle rough roads. While it retains the same design, the bike gets a 2-piece seat set at 835 mm, compared to 790 mm on the Speed 400, longer travel suspension, wider handlebars with knuckle guards and a 19-inch front wheel shod with dual-purpose tyres. It also has a slightly longer wheelbase compared to the roadster and weighs 9 kg more than the Speed 400 at 179 kg. The bike also gets a larger 320 mm brake disc at the front.
Both models are powered by a 398cc, liquid-cooled engine that makes 39.5 bhp at 8,000 rpm, and 3.82 kgm at 6,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox via a torque-assist clutch. The bikes further come equipped with an analogue instrument console with a small LCD screen, a USB charging port, ride-by-wire and dual-channel ABS.
