In a short span of time, the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida has been homologated for the 2023 MotoGP Bharat. This comes nearly a year after plans to host the MotoGP in India were confirmed. Preparation for the track to be suited to MotoGP conditions started soon after, and now the inaugural edition of MotoGP India is all set to take place from September 22 to 24, 2023, at the BIC.
If you’ve lived long enough, you’ll be aware that the Buddh International Circuit was originally developed for Formula 1 racing back in 2011, with the last F1 race hosted back in 2013. Now, the track has gone through modifications to make it suitable for motorcycle racing, such as 1800 metres of new safety barricades, and the extension of gravel sections, since you know, precaution against crashes. However, the overall layout of the track remains the same. It consists of thirteen turns — eight right and five left, along with a 1006-metre straight section that’s divided into a downhill part and an uphill part. There are expectations of riders touching the 370 kmph mark, after Brad Binder from KTM Red Bull set the high-speed record at 366.1 kmph
Motorsports in India have been a rather niche sport, but that’s not to say that there isn’t a huge following around it — just that the viewership and general audience interest isn’t at the level of, say cricket or football.
