Mahindra & Mahindra-owned Classic Legends is all set to launch the much-awaited BSA Gold Star in India on August 15. This would be the biggest motorcycle from the brand… in India, since some foreign markets have the Jawa 650 OHC.
The famous Czech brand has sustained itself in Europe, and sells a bunch of motorcycles including an adventure bike and a scrambler. In fact, the India-made Jawa is sold as the Jawa 300 CL and the Jawa 350 CL Perak is also sold alongside these bikes. Yes, so if you thought the Jawa 650 OHC is a rebranded BSA Gold Star, you’ll be forgiven.
The Jawa 650 comes with a 644cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine making 39.4 bhp at 6000 rpm and 5.09 kgm at 4500 rpm. This engine is paired with a 5-speed transmission without the luxury of a slipper clutch.
However, it does get other modern amenities like LED illumination, dual-channel ABS and a digital inset in the analog dual-pod instrument console. Cycle parts on this bike include telescopic fork and dual-shock suspension setup, disc brakes at both ends bolted onto a 19-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear unit.
The bike is available in a Sport variant, too. The split cradle frame is identical but it gets an adjustable front mudguard, shorter rear fender, a handlebar brace with a foam roll and the twin exhausts are now inclined upwards. Bits like the teardrop-shaped tank, golden pinstripes and the 3D Jawa logo further add to the retro appeal of the motorcycle.
Classic Legends is unlikely to bring the Jawa 650 OHC to India. But with the BSA Gold Star rolling-in next month, gives retro motorcycle lovers an option to look beyond the RE 650s.
