The BMW M5 has long been celebrated among automotive enthusiasts for its dual nature as a track-capable road car with a unique appeal. After a long development period, the next generation of this German super-saloon has been unveiled, now featuring a mild electric surge in its steps.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2025 BMW M5 retains its 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 petrol engine. However, it is now complemented by a hybrid system with an 18.6 kWh battery pack. This setup delivers a combined output of 717 bhp (577 bhp from the engine and an additional 140 bhp from the hybrid unit) and 102 kgm of torque. This comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid system has enough juice to drive the car up to 70 km in pure electric mode before switching to the internal combustion unit.
This sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in under 3.5 seconds and reach 200 kph in approximately 10.9 seconds. BMW has stated that the top speed is limited to 250 kph, but can be increased to 305 kph with the optional M Driver’s Package.
The 2025 BMW M5 comes with adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers and standard safety equipment including ABS, EBD, electronic stability control, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with parking assist.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) also makes its mark with features such as blind spot detection, lane keep warning, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
One thing that must be considered is the new M5’s weight. Now 500 kg heavier than the current series 5, it remains to be seen how this will play out in the real world.
Exterior Styling and Looks
The 2025 BMW M5 makes an impression with its aggressive yet familiar design. The previous sleek design has been replaced with a more angular look. The BMW M kidney grille is illuminated, finished in gloss black, and stands out with the sporty bumpers and large air intakes. The vehicle also incorporates an all-new LED headlamp setup with signature DRLs and lighting elements similar to the regular 5 Series.
On the sides, the M5 features large ceramic brakes, M Light Alloy wheels available in 20-inch and 21-inch sizes, carbon-fibre ORVMs, an optional carbon-fibre roof, and M5 badging behind the rear quarter glass on the C-pillar. The rear is complete with a carbon-fibre lip spoiler, a large diffuser, and a quad exhaust system.
Interior and Features
The cabin features carbon-fibre inlays on the dashboard and door panel trims, replacing the faux wood in the previous 5 Series. The ambient lighting is illuminated in M-specific colours (red, blue, and white). This lighting extends into the steering wheel and includes an illuminated M badge among other buttons.
Comfort and convenience features include a four-zone automatic climate control system, wireless phone charging, heated and powered front seats, an auto tailgate, a premium Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, and a panoramic moonroof.
An optional M Carbon Exterior package and other features like an Alcantara headliner, seat ventilation, a heated steering wheel, and M Performance forged light alloy wheels are also available.
Central to the interior is a curved display with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system supports wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and features a heads-up display (HUD) with M-specific content. The setup runs on the latest BMW Operating System 8.5, which includes augmented view functions and voice commands.
Launch and Availability
While BMW India has its hands full at the moment, with the new LWB 5 Series, the Mini Coopers, and possibly the new X3 as well, we can expect a surprise announcement from BMW, but it will take a while.
