Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s press announcement mentions the presence of ‘the world of Toyota today, Toyota tomorrow, and Toyota of the future’. That doesn’t give away anything except maybe the presence of the current line-up and products from the future. But one look at the company’s other social media profiles, and it’s confirmed that Toyota’s absence from the mid-sized saloon segment will end soon. The Toyota Vios will be showcased at the Auto Expo.
When it makes a market appearance, most likely to happen later this year, the Toyota Vios will be positioned below the Corolla Altis but above the Etios. It’s available in Southeast Asia (albeit as Yaris Ativ), like most of the other Toyota products here, and is likely to remain unchanged for India. It won’t be a surprise if TKM chooses to offer the car with a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel, as seen on the Etios but in different states of tune.
The Toyota Vios will rival other products in the segment such as the Maruti Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Fiat Linea, etc. With multiple sightings over the last few years, it’s clear that Toyota was toying with the idea of bringing it to India. Launching it now ensures a better chance of success and a bit more freedom to enjoy it since most of the rivals are halfway through their respective update cycles.
While Toyota’s famous traits of reliability and longevity will be there, with the Vios the Japanese carmaker will offer a premium interior, better styled exterior, and a good number of features. The test cars spotted recently were reportedly equipped with things like touchscreen infotainment system, automatic gearbox, projector headlamps with LED elements, decently large alloy wheels, etc.
