BMW India has officially opened pre-launch bookings for the all-new 7 Series, giving Indian buyers their first opportunity to reserve the German marque’s flagship luxury saloon ahead of its market launch. While the company has remained tight-lipped on specifications and pricing for the India-bound model, the announcement strongly hints that the updated 7 Series, complete with BMW’s latest Neue Klasse technologies, is set to arrive on Indian roads sooner rather than later.
Bookings commenced on 1 August through BMW’s authorised dealer network and the company’s official website. More significantly, BMW has confirmed that customers will be able to choose between internal combustion engine and fully electric powertrains, suggesting that both the refreshed 7 Series and the updated i7 are likely to be part of the Indian line-up.
Although the Indian press release stops short of revealing technical details, the global version of the updated 7 Series made its debut earlier this year with one of the most comprehensive overhauls seen on BMW’s flagship saloon. The facelift introduces a cleaner exterior design, revised lighting signatures and the latest interpretation of BMW’s illuminated kidney grille, while the cabin adopts the brand’s new Panoramic iDrive interface inspired by the forthcoming Neue Klasse generation of vehicles.
Inside, the biggest transformation is expected to be technological rather than cosmetic. The updated 7 Series debuts BMW Operating System X, paired with the Panoramic Vision display that stretches information across the base of the windscreen. A large central touchscreen, optional passenger display and the latest version of BMW’s Theatre Screen for rear occupants are all expected to feature, reinforcing the limousine’s position as one of the most technology-rich luxury cars on sale.
BMW’s own announcement for India highlights many of these changes, describing a more monolithic exterior, new Iconic Glow kidney grille, crystal-effect headlights and an interior that combines luxurious materials with advanced digital technology. The company also points to the integration of Neue Klasse technologies as a defining feature of the new model, signalling a shift towards the next generation of BMW’s user interface and connected experience.
The biggest question now revolves around the powertrain line-up for India. BMW has only confirmed that both ICE and battery electric versions will be offered, without specifying variants. Globally, the refreshed range includes petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric derivatives, although markets receive different combinations depending on local demand. India currently offers the diesel-powered 740d alongside the all-electric i7, and those models are expected to continue in updated form.
If BMW follows its existing strategy, the diesel-powered 740d is likely to remain the volume seller thanks to its blend of effortless performance and long-distance touring ability, while the i7 will continue to target buyers looking for a fully electric luxury limousine. The introduction of the latest battery technology in the global i7 has also resulted in improvements to driving range and charging capability, although BMW India has yet to confirm whether those upgrades will be carried over to the local specification.
The timing of the announcement is hardly surprising. Competition in the flagship luxury segment has intensified over the past year, with manufacturers placing greater emphasis on digital experiences alongside traditional comfort and craftsmanship. BMW appears keen to ensure the 7 Series remains at the forefront by bringing its latest software, infotainment and interface technologies to its halo saloon before they gradually filter down through the rest of the range.
For now, BMW has revealed little beyond the opening of bookings, leaving pricing, specifications and the final variant list for launch day.
What is clear, however, is that the all-new 7 Series represents far more than a routine facelift. It is set to become the first BMW luxury saloon in India to showcase the brand’s Neue Klasse digital philosophy while continuing to offer buyers the freedom to choose between traditional combustion power and full electrification. If the global model is anything to go by, BMW’s flagship is preparing to raise the bar once again in the luxury limousine segment.
