General Motors has decided to say goodbye to the Indian market, although the export operations from India will still be on, the company said in an official announcement. The warranties of existing customers will remain unaffected.
GM also assures that alongside the warranty, spares and service will be available to existing customers. The company’s official customer care lines will continue to be open. New product sales will stop by the end of 2017.
This comes as a result of an internal review the automotive company had conducted last year. With exports growing at a steady rate, GM will continue to manufacture and export products to various markets. The new Chevrolet Beat (which the Indian market couldn’t get) will be followed by the introduction of a compact saloon based on it (exhibited as Essentia at the 2016 Auto Expo) in Mexico, Central and South American markets.
Manufacturing meanwhile has been ceased at the Halol plant, and negotiations are on for its sale. Rumoured arrival of the Anglo-Chinese brand MG is yet to be formalised, and the Halol plant might very well be used for that, although no announcement has been made. Production for GM’s export vehicles will continue at the Talegaon facility.
