Jaguar is looking at widening its portfolio with the introduction of the diesel engined XE. The midsize saloon, launched at the 2016 Auto Expo, was available as a petrol-only model until now. But it’s clear that there is a growing demand for the diesel version, given that the competition (Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Volvo S60) offers both petrol and diesel engine choices.
Critically acclaimed, the XE (P) offers the prestige of the Jaguar brand, along with decent performance and a drive that’s as pure as it is exhilarating. The diesel engine, same as the one found in the XF (D), is a 2-litre unit that makes 177 bhp. In the XF, it’s tuned to make that power at 4,000 rpm, and 43.8 kgm@1,750-2,000 rpm.
The company is yet to announce the prices, but it will not be surprising if the XE (D) is priced very close to the petrol version. In comparison, both the Audi A4 and the C-Class are priced at about Rs 40 lakh for the base diesel, while the BMW 3 Series is available at Rs 36.9 lakh, and the Volvo S60 at Rs 34.4 lakh onwards. All prices are ex-showroom of the respective diesel variants. The XE (P)’s prices start at Rs 39.9 lakh.
JLR India’s MD, Rohit Suri, said, “In the past one year, Jaguar XE has gained immense popularity and success in the Indian market and we are now pleased to offer the choice of diesel to our customers.”
Now that we’re bringing the diesel, can we please have the V6 petrol, too? Please, Jaguar!
