JSW MG Motor India’s luxury retail channel, MG SELECT, has partnered with celebrated Indian couturier Gaurav Gupta to unveil one of the more unusual automotive collaborations of the year. The brand has introduced exclusive Couture Editions of the MG Cyberster and MG M9, bringing Gupta’s signature design philosophy from the runway onto the road.
The bespoke models made their public debut during the unveiling of Gupta’s latest couture collection, Light Song, at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The collection itself was no small undertaking, having taken over nine months to complete with more than 200 artisans contributing nearly 6,000 hours of craftsmanship across more than 70 couture creations. The Cyberster and M9 Couture Editions were revealed as an extension of that artistic vision, becoming what MG describes as India’s first couture-edition luxury vehicles.
At the heart of the collaboration lies Gaurav Gupta’s Serpent Infinity motif, a design element that has become synonymous with his work. Representing continuity, transformation and quiet power, the motif has been woven into both vehicles using the same principles of layered textures, intricate detailing and handcrafted finishes seen throughout the Light Song collection. Rather than simply applying cosmetic changes, the idea was to reinterpret automotive surfaces in much the same way a couture garment is constructed, creating visual movement as light interacts with the bodywork.
The partnership is not entirely new. Earlier this year, MG SELECT and Gaurav Gupta collaborated during the opening of the designer’s menswear flagship store in New Delhi, where an early interpretation of the Cyberster hinted at what the two brands could achieve together. This latest project takes that concept considerably further, with both the Cyberster and M9 receiving bespoke treatments inspired by Gupta’s sculptural design language. In a fitting touch, the Cyberster also formed part of the runway presentation itself, blurring the lines between automotive design and fashion.
Exclusivity is a major part of the package. MG SELECT will produce just 50 examples each of the Cyberster Couture Edition and M9 Couture Edition, with both models being sold exclusively through the luxury retail network. Pre-reservations remain open until August 3, when the prices will be announced, giving prospective buyers a brief opportunity to secure one of the limited-run models before deliveries begin.
Collaborations between fashion houses and car manufacturers are nothing new, but they often stop at special paint finishes or branded interiors. This project attempts something more ambitious by carrying a designer’s creative language across an entire vehicle. Whether viewed as rolling sculptures or highly exclusive collector’s pieces, the MG Cyberster and M9 Couture Editions certainly stand apart from the usual limited-edition formula.
