At a time when emissions norms are forcing other manufacturers to ditch diesel powerplants, Hyundai is adding diesels across the range. The Elantra is the latest model to get a BS6-compliant engine option, which will only be available in two variants — SX and SX(O).
The new 1.5-litre diesel engine is not as powerful as the 1.6-litre diesel that was available in the previous-generation Elantra, but you do get better fuel economy. In numbers, the 1.5-litre diesel engine delivers 113 bhp and 25.5 kg-m of peak torque. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
This engine update doesn’t bring additional features, but the Elantra is loaded to the gills with features already. The top SX(O) variant gets a 10-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging and front parking sensors among other features.
Hyundai also has dropped the prices for Elantra’s petrol variant and discontinued the base S variant. The petrol Elantra now starts at Rs 17.6 lakh for the SX manual variant, while the diesel SX manual variant starts at Rs 18.7 lakh, all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
