Tata Motors has confirmed in a press announcement that the all-new Tata Harrier will be launched on January 23. The five-seat SUV is based on the same platform as the Land Rover Discovery Sport, and will be the most premium offering in the carmaker’s portfolio.
Originally showcased as the H5X Concept at the Auto Expo, the Tata Harrier isn’t just a stylish-looking SUV, it also is one of the most competitive ones made by the brand. Although it shares the platform with the Land Rover Discovery Sport, the Harrier comes with a different suspension setup. And more importantly, it’ll only be launched as a front-wheel drive model. Powered by a 2-litre diesel engine (138 bhp and 35.6 kgm; sourced from Fiat), the Harrier will be manual-only at the time of the launch.
The Harrier comes twenty years after the Safari, and it shows how Tata SUVs have progressed. It comes with drive modes and also a Terrain Response System to vary the vehicle’s characteristics off the road. Despite the lack of an all-wheel-drive system, it’s said to regulate power in a way that the Harrier feels more potent even tackling the rough stuff.
On the inside, the Harrier comes equipped with features like six airbags, a large 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a nine-speaker JBL audio system, etc. The boot capacity is 425 litres, but it can be increased to 810 litres by folding the rear seats down. In terms of dimensions, the Harrier is longer than the Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson.
