Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) to establish public EV charging stations across India. This collaboration will utilize HPCL’s fuel station network and TPEM’s insights from Tata EVs on Indian roads to install chargers at locations frequently visited by Tata EV owners.
This agreement explores and encourages wider adoption of electric vehicles in India. The agreement will leverage HPCL’s nationwide network of over 21,500 fuel stations with plans to install 5,000 electric vehicle charging stations by December 2024 in said stations. HPCL has already installed a total of 3,050 EV charging and battery-swapping stations, nationwide.
TPEM and HPCL are also set to introduce a co-branded RFID card payment system to simplify the charging experience for EV owners at these stations.
Chief Strategy Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., Mr Balaje Rajan, expressed his views on the importance of charging infrastructure in mainstreaming EVs in India. He highlighted the strategic partnership with HPCL as essential for facilitating infrastructure development to support the expanding EV customer base.
Mr Debashis Chakraverty, Chief General Manager of Retail Strategy & BD at HPCL, noted that the alliance with Tata Motors aims to enable HPCL’s strategic expansion in EV charging infrastructure, leveraging Tata Motors’ significant vehicle base.
