Volkswagen has launched the Ameo, its compact sedan, at a price beginning at Rs 5.24 lakh onwards, ex-showroom, Delhi. The Ameo is based on the Polo hatchback and will offer some first-in-class features like standard ABS and two airbags, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, all four auto-up windows, front centre armrest, static cornering lights, and a telescopic steering wheel. The Ameo is currently available with only one powertrain specification, the three-cylinder 1.2-litre MPI engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. A new version of the 1.5-litre diesel that powers the Polo and Vento will be launched by Diwali. There are no plans for a TSI variant of the Ameo, but a TDI DSG is possible if the automatic market opens up enough.
The complete breakup of prices is given at the bottom. It compares favourably with the segment leader, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, by virtue of a much longer features list while being comparable on price. We’ll drive the Ameo in a short while, so stay tuned for our first drive report.
