Bar the slow-selling, erstwhile Touareg, the German carmaker Volkswagen has had no presence in the SUV segment. With the new VW Tiguan, the company intends to change that. Launched today, the Tiguan will help establish VW’s position in the segment. Here’s a quick look at what it offers:
Based on the company’s modular ‘MQB’ structure, the Tiguan is powered by a 2-litre TDi diesel engine which makes 140 bhp and 34.67 kgm. It comes mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and 4MOTION AWD system. With a rated average figure of 17.06 kpl, the Tiguan can very well cruise for long distances without having to refuel — a quality only improved with the huge 71-litre fuel tank.
Available in two trims — Comfortline and Highline — the VW Tiguan comes with a three-zone climate control, easy-open boot, Pedestrian safety, six airbags, ABS, ESC, hill start, drive modes, self-sealing tyres, cruise control, Apple CarPlay-ready infotainment unit, LED-lit panoramic sunroof, etc. The colour palette comprises five paint options: Tungsten Silver, Oryx White, Deep Black, Indium Grey, and Atlantic Blue.
The 4.4-metre-long SUV offers 615 litres of boot space with all the seats up, but can be increased to 1655 litres with the rear ones folded. A wheelbase of 2677 mm means there’s a good amount of space inside, too. It gets 18-inch wheels on the Highline variant and 17-inchers on the Comfortline, weighs 1720 kilos, and offers a minimum ground clearance of 149 mm.
Prices start at Rs 27.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the Comfortline trim. The better-equipped Highline version is available for Rs 31.38 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
