Land Rover has revealed the road-legal Defender Dakar, a limited-production performance SUV inspired by the Dakar-winning D7X-R rally car, with reservations set to open in early 2027.
Land Rover is taking the Defender’s off-road credentials to another level with the new Defender Dakar, a limited-run road-legal SUV developed using technology and hardware derived from the brand’s Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R competition machine. Revealed as a Design Preview Model during Monterey Car Week, the Defender Dakar combines the extreme hardware of the rally car with the usability of a road-going SUV. The production version is expected to be available for reservations from early 2027, with complete specifications set to be announced during the 2027 Dakar Rally.

At its core, the Defender Dakar is closely related to the Defender Octa, but it receives extensive modifications inspired by the D7X-R. The SUV sits higher and has a wider track, while its off-road stance is further enhanced by massive 35-inch all-terrain tyres mounted on forged 20-inch wheels. The suspension has also been upgraded with coil springs and Bilstein Advanced dampers, giving the Dakar greater capability over demanding terrain.
Land Rover has also introduced dedicated drive modes aimed specifically at extreme off-road conditions. The new Dunes and Gravel modes are designed to optimise the SUV for different surfaces, while a new Flight Mode is intended to help maintain stability when the vehicle becomes airborne and subsequently lands on uneven ground. It is a feature that gives the Defender Dakar a direct connection to the demands of rally competition.
The visual changes are equally dramatic. The SUV gets roof-mounted auxiliary lights, a fixed metal roof and a carbon-fibre bonnet, along with raised carbon-fibre air intakes. The extended wheel arches feature exposed rivets, while additional mud flaps, a front undershield and extra underbody protection reinforce its rally-inspired character. A tailgate blanking panel also contributes to the purposeful appearance.
Customers will have several exterior finishes to choose from, including the Dakar Sand and Yanbu Turquoise combination, which pays homage to the D7X-R that secured victory in the Dakar Rally.
Inside, the Defender Dakar moves further away from the conventional luxury-SUV formula. It features a dedicated 2+2 seating layout and specially designed front race seats, with four-point racing harnesses available as an option. The rear section has also been redesigned with motorsport-inspired practicality in mind, including storage space for racing helmets and dedicated mounting points in the load bay for the spare wheel and an air compressor.
The biggest talking point, however, sits beneath the bonnet. The Defender Dakar is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 635 bhp and 76.47 kgm. Unlike the competition version, Land Rover says the road-going engine will operate unrestricted. The SUV also retains the D7X-R’s transmission and driveline, further strengthening the connection between the road car and its rally-bred sibling.
While Land Rover has yet to reveal the Defender Dakar’s final performance figures, production numbers or pricing, the combination of its powerful V8, rally-derived suspension and extreme off-road equipment makes it one of the most focused Defenders yet.
With reservations scheduled to open in early 2027, the Defender Dakar promises to bring genuine Dakar-inspired hardware to customers who want far more than just the appearance of a hardcore off-roader.
