Industrialist Yohan Poonawalla has made history by winning the prestigious ‘Best in Show’ award at the Valletta Concours in Malta with his 1928 Rolls-Royce Experimental Sports Phantom ’17EX’. This is the first time an Indian-owned car has achieved such a distinction on the international stage.
The 17EX, the only surviving example with coachwork by Jarvis of Wimbledon, was meticulously restored in Austria before its award-winning debut. The car’s exceptional condition and rich history impressed both judges and spectators.

Originally conceived as a high-speed prototype, inspired by Bentley’s Le Mans victories, the 17EX was designed to reach speeds of 160 kph. It underwent rigorous testing under the direct supervision of Sir Henry Royce. The car’s unique design, unmatched provenance, and storied history have solidified its status as one of the most remarkable coach-built cars ever made.
The judges and audience at the Valletta Concours were captivated by the 17EX’s elegance and heritage, awarding it the event’s highest honor.
Poonawalla’s victory is a testament to his passion for automotive heritage and his commitment to preserving iconic vehicles. This achievement not only brings pride to India but also highlights the country’s growing appreciation for classic cars. Poonawalla’s collection, which features a diverse range of pre-war, post-war, and modern classics, showcases his discerning taste and dedication to automotive excellence.
