Yamaha has officially entered India’s premium electric scooter space with the launch of the Aerox E, priced at ₹ 2.81 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned as the electric counterpart to the popular Aerox 155, the new model retains the sporty maxi-scooter styling of its petrol sibling while introducing an all-electric powertrain aimed at riders looking for performance without tailpipe emissions.

At first glance, the Aerox E looks almost identical to the internal combustion model. Yamaha has wisely resisted the temptation to completely reinvent the design, choosing instead to build on a shape that has already found favour among enthusiasts. The sharp front apron, twin LED headlamps, stepped seat and muscular side panels remain, giving the scooter a purposeful stance that continues to stand apart from more conventional electric offerings.

The biggest changes lie beneath the bodywork. The Aerox E is powered by an electric motor paired with a dual-battery setup, allowing it to deliver instant acceleration while maintaining the practicality expected from a premium urban scooter. Yamaha claims a certified riding range of 106 km on a full charge, placing it comfortably among the more capable electric scooters currently available in the market.

Riders can choose between multiple riding modes depending on their priorities, whether that is conserving battery for longer commutes or unlocking sharper performance. A dedicated Boost mode is also available for stronger acceleration when required, making overtakes and quick getaways easier in city traffic. As with most electric scooters, power delivery is smooth and immediate, characteristics that should complement the Aerox’s sporty nature.

Yamaha has also equipped the Aerox E with a TFT instrument console that displays essential riding information in a clear and modern layout. The display supports smartphone connectivity and provides access to ride data and other connected features, bringing the electric scooter in line with current expectations in the premium segment. Full LED lighting, keyless operation and a USB charging port further enhance everyday usability.

The chassis package remains focused on sporty handling. Disc brakes at both ends, telescopic front forks and twin rear shock absorbers continue to feature, while the riding position remains more engaging than that of a typical family scooter. Yamaha has also retained the generous under-seat storage, ensuring practicality has not been sacrificed in the transition to electric power.

The launch of the Aerox E marks an important step for Yamaha in India. While the company has previously focused on performance-oriented petrol scooters and motorcycles, the growing demand for premium electric mobility has prompted it to expand its portfolio. Instead of chasing outright affordability, Yamaha has chosen to position the Aerox E as a lifestyle product aimed at buyers who value styling, technology and performance alongside zero-emission commuting.

Its pricing places it above many mainstream electric scooters, but Yamaha appears confident that the Aerox name carries enough appeal to justify the premium. Buyers considering alternatives in this space are likely to weigh its sporty character and brand value against more established electric rivals, particularly those offering longer ranges or larger feature lists.

The Aerox E also signals Yamaha’s broader intent for the Indian EV market. Rather than introducing an entirely new model, the company has electrified one of its most recognisable products, allowing existing Aerox enthusiasts to transition to electric mobility without giving up the scooter’s distinctive character.

Whether that strategy proves successful will become clear over the coming months. What is certain, however, is that Yamaha has finally entered India’s premium electric scooter segment with a product that stays true to the Aerox formula. It remains sporty, eye-catching and rider-focused, only now it trades petrol for batteries in a market that is evolving faster than ever.
