What is it? These off-road pants and armoured base layer are both from the Trailcraft range of off-road riding gear from Raida. The whole range has been conceptualised to provide the rider with a comfortable and protected riding experience at a fairly affordable price point.

Is it any good? The Trailcraft off-road pants are made of PU-coated 600D polyester, with Cordura panels in high-stress zones for added protection. It also features YKK zippers, an adjustable ratchet closure system, leather heat shield panels on the inside of each leg and integrated mesh panels for ventilation. It is designed to sit comfortably on top of body armour while facilitating free movement for off-roading. When we had the previous iteration for testing at the beginning of the year, we observed that the lack of stretch panels seemed to be the only glaring issue, which they have fixed with this model. The pants now get stretch panels on certain areas that require free movement, making a lot of difference in comfort and wearability.

Coming to the armoured base layer, Raida gives us a 4-way stretch polyester-spandex fabric construction with pockets that house CE level 2 armour on the back, shoulders and elbows, with CE level 1 chest armour. The base layer is designed with thumb loops for a secure fit, keeping the sleeves in place during rides, but it could do with additional fasteners to keep the elbow guards in place. It can tend to trap some amount of body heat when the wearer is stationary, but while on the move, the airflow keeps it cool. Having used the gear extensively, we can say that for beginner and casual off-road riders, these pieces of gear are a good value-for-money investment.
