When I first took delivery of the Comet about six months ago in Goa, I must admit that I was a little skeptical about it. Sure, it looked as cute as a button, but it also looked… delicate, and it only had two doors, which always involves contortions
if you want to sit at the back. Most importantly, I didn’t have access to hassle-free charging, which is not the best state of affairs if you have to live with an EV. I’m glad I stayed the course with the little MG, however, because it has turned out to be a delightful companion.

The charging issue was solved by having a long 15-amp extension cable made, dangling it out of my 1st-floor kitchen window, and
connecting the charger to it. Yes, this is a slow method; a full charge from about 20 per cent takes around six hours, but with some planning, it isn’t too much of a hassle. However, keep in mind that I also have access to ICE cars; if the Comet had been my sole method of transport, I would likely have become annoyed.

That aside, it’s been a breeze to use in Goa, due to its compact dimensions. My parents now use the Comet more than I do, because they find that it’s as close as you can currently get to their ideal vehicle – an electric Tata Nano (they have a Nano Twist). It didn’t take them too long to get used to an automatic transmission, and they’re so happy with it that they’re actively considering buying one. I find myself reaching for its keys when I need to do chores around the neighbourhood, or if I want to pop down to the beach and it’s too hot to ride a motorcycle.

Pretty much everyone that’s been in the car sings its praises, and with MG’s new battery-leasing scheme, it’s become an attractive proposition for some of these people who the Comet’s price had earlier put off. Range is on the low side (around 170 km per full charge), but that aside, the car’s been unfailingly reliable, practical, surprisingly comfortable, and quite a lot of fun to drive. I certainly don’t regret having added it to the Motoring long-term garage.
