Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the all-new ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV that is set to become one of the brand’s most accessible EVs in Europe. Positioned below the larger ID. models, the newcomer blends premium features, generous practicality and the latest software-driven technology, while carrying a starting price of € 27,995 in Germany (₹ 30.78 Lakh approx.). Orders have already opened alongside its global debut.
The ID. Cross is the third member of Volkswagen’s new generation of compact electric cars after the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI. Built on the latest MEB+ architecture, the SUV measures 4,153 mm in length and promises greater interior space than the combustion-powered T-Cross thanks to its dedicated EV platform. Boot space stands at 475 litres, which is 20 litres more than the T-Cross, while a 25-litre front storage compartment adds extra practicality by providing space for charging cables and smaller items.
Visually, the ID. Cross follows Volkswagen’s latest Pure Positive design philosophy with clean surfaces, upright proportions and a distinctive lighting signature. Buyers opting for higher trims receive IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps, illuminated Volkswagen logos and 3D LED tail lamps. Inside, the cabin adopts a more premium approach than expected at this price point, featuring fabric-covered dashboard surfaces, metallic switchgear, massage seats, a Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic glass roof on higher variants.
The dashboard is dominated by a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and a 12.9-inch central touchscreen running Volkswagen’s new Innovision infotainment system. One particularly interesting feature is a retro display mode that transforms the digital instruments into a layout inspired by the original Mk1 Golf. Instead of a traditional rev counter, the display features a power meter showing energy output and regeneration, blending classic styling with modern EV functionality.
Powertrain options include three electric motor outputs producing 116 bhp, 135 bhp and 211 bhp, paired with either a 37 kWh or 52 kWh battery pack. The flagship 211 bhp version delivers a claimed WLTP range of up to 427 km. Volkswagen says the smaller battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in around 23 minutes using a 90 kW DC fast charger, while the larger battery completes the same charge in approximately 24 minutes at up to 105 kW. Home AC charging is rated at up to 11 kW across the range.
The ID. Cross also borrows several technologies from Volkswagen’s more expensive models. Connected Travel Assist can now detect traffic lights and automatically bring the vehicle to a stop when required. One Pedal Driving has also been introduced, allowing drivers to manage acceleration and deceleration primarily through the accelerator pedal. Parking assistance has been upgraded with a 360-degree camera system and Park Assist Pro, which enables fully automated parking and even remote parking using a smartphone.
Ride quality has received equal attention. Volkswagen says the chassis has been specifically tuned for electric front-wheel drive, with improved refinement, lower noise levels and sharper steering. The 211 bhp variant can also be equipped with a newly developed adaptive DCC suspension, promising a balance between comfort and agility. Vehicle-to-load capability comes as standard, allowing owners to power external appliances at up to 3.6 kW, while the larger battery version is capable of towing trailers weighing up to 1,200 kg.
Initially, customers in Germany can order the Life and Style variants powered by the 211 bhp motor and 52 kWh battery, priced from € 36,525 (₹ 40.16 Lakh Approx). The more affordable Trend variant with the 116 bhp motor and 37 kWh battery, starting at € 27,995 (₹ 30.78 Lakh approx.), will follow shortly, along with additional powertrain options. With its blend of compact dimensions, premium equipment and competitive pricing, Volkswagen clearly hopes the ID. Cross will become its next volume-selling electric SUV.
