Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new GLA, and while the familiar name remains, the SUV itself has undergone a comprehensive transformation. As one of the brand’s strongest-selling models globally and a key volume driver in India, the GLA plays an important role in Mercedes-Benz’s lineup. Rather than introducing a simple mid-cycle update, the German automaker has re-engineered the SUV from the ground up, bringing significant advancements in electrification, design, technology, practicality, and connectivity.

The most significant change is the GLA’s move towards electrification. Unlike its predecessor, the new model has been developed on a platform that accommodates electric powertrains from the outset. At launch, Mercedes-Benz will offer the SUV with three fully electric variants, with the top-spec version claiming a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 657km. For buyers not ready to make the switch to a full EV, the company will also introduce new 48V mild-hybrid petrol powertrains at a later stage. This dual-powertrain strategy ensures that the GLA remains relevant across different markets and evolving customer preferences.

The SUV’s exterior design has also been thoroughly revised. Mercedes-Benz has moved away from the taller, more upright proportions of the outgoing model, giving the new GLA a sleeker and more dynamic appearance. A wheelbase that is 61mm longer than before, combined with a wider rear track, contributes to a more planted stance. Electric versions further distinguish themselves with an illuminated grille, connected lighting signatures, and aerodynamic wheel designs that enhance both efficiency and visual appeal.

Inside, the GLA receives one of its biggest upgrades yet. The cabin adopts a cleaner and more minimalist layout, centred around a new panoramic display that stretches across the dashboard. The latest generation of the MBUX infotainment system powers the experience, introducing an advanced AI-driven virtual assistant. By integrating technologies from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Bing, the system is capable of more natural conversations and smarter responses than previous iterations.

Practicality has improved as well. The longer wheelbase translates into increased headroom and legroom for passengers, making the cabin more spacious and comfortable. Boot space has grown by 70 litres to 410 litres, while electric variants gain an additional 107-litre front storage compartment, commonly referred to as a frunk.

Mercedes-Benz has also equipped the new GLA with a broader suite of technology and driver assistance features. These include enhanced Level 2 ADAS functions, lane-change assist, improved automated parking systems, Google Maps-based navigation, over-the-air software updates, and a transparent bonnet view that helps drivers navigate difficult terrain.

Although Mercedes-Benz India has yet to announce launch details, the GLA remains a crucial model for the brand in the country. Given its popularity in the entry-level luxury SUV segment, many of these upgrades are expected to feature on the India-spec version when it eventually arrives.
